PRODUCTS FOR
WINTER-PROOFING YOUR SKIN
Written by: Melissa J. HertzlerIt’s coming. Bitter winds, frigid temperatures. That means dry skin. There’s no escaping it. You try to hide inside, avoiding the wind chill, but the cozy warmth you feel is a false sense of security. Your heater zaps the moisture right out of your skin. Your arms become itchy, your face flaky, your hair defies gravity. Is there no escape?YES! With a little education, a few natural products and some stuff that you can probably find in your refrigerator, you can make it through this winter, glowing.
First, let’s talk about your face. After all, while the rest of you is bundled up in wool and fleece, your poor face takes the brunt of the elements, completely naked. Regardless of your skin type, you’ve got to moisturize. But let’s not be too hasty. First, steer clear of any moisture which contains petroleum products. Mineral oil, petrolatum/petroleum jelly all lay on top of the skin which, at best might keep your skin from losing its natural oils, but it prevents your skin from breathing, and may cause allergic reactions. There are much better ingredients which are widely used in natural moisturizers such as jojoba, sweet almond oil, shea butter, and coconut oil. If you’re worried that moisturizing will cause breakouts, then only moisturize three times a week, using products that are oil-free.
When it comes to moisturizing, there are some areas which need special attention. If you over moisturize the area around your eyes, the skin will puff up and you’ll be left with “saggy eye syndrome”. Solution: apply any one of the following to your closed eyes, and lay down and relax for a few minutes:
- Wet tea bags - black or green tea (make sure they’re cool)
- Cucumber slices
- Wet herbal tea bags - chamomile, elder flower, catnip or lavender
- Cotton balls dampened with witch hazel
