WHY SHOP FOR
ORGANIC CLOTHING?
The main options for organic clothing are cotton, bamboo, and hemp. But there are others as well. In addition, new plant based clothing fibers are being researched and developed all the time. For example, organic clothing can now be made from soy. That's pretty amazing to think that you can wear a t-shirt that comes from the same plant that gives us tofu!
Cotton is the number one source of clothing on earth. But it's also the single crop that uses the greatest amount of chemical pesticides in the world. Therefore it's very important to try to convert as much conventional cotton production over to organic cotton in order to reduce the amount of pollution we put into the soil and water each year. These days, more and more clothing companies are shifting over to organic cotton, which is a great start.
The global cotton crop not only uses lots of chemical pesticides, but also incredibly huge amounts of water. cotton also takes up vast areas of land in order to grow. Bamboo is a more ecologically beneficial crop to grow. Bamboo does not require any irrigation, and it also produces significantly more usable material per acre than cotton does. Some chemicals are usually needed to process the tough woody bamboo raw material into a viscose that can be used to make incredibly soft and smooth clothing. However, modern methods recycle these materials so that they don't have a negative impact on the environment.
Hemp is another organic clothing crop that gets a lot of attention. Aside from the other uses that the plant is known for, hemp has been a historically important plant fiber, especially for making rope due to it's strength. Hemp is not as naturally soft as cotton, but it can also be processed in ways similar to bamboo in order to make a very smooth fabric. Hemp is also a more efficient crop to grow than cotton, since much more of the plant can be used to make fabric.
These days organic clothing is showing up everywhere. You can get organic yoga clothes, undergarments, sleepwear, casual clothing for men or women, and even baby clothing. If you're not sure where to find organic clothing near you, don't worry - there are many online stores that sell organic clothes in all different styles, colors, and sizes. With just a few clicks on the keyboard you can order a whole new organic wardrobe for yourself. You'll feel good knowing that the clothes you wear didn't hurt the earth to make.
