THE LUXURY OF REAL FOOD

Food is one of those things that ties us all together. It is first and foremost a basic survival need, but it also has a nurturing component, a pleasure component, an emotional component and a social component. Where ever you go, anywhere in the world, the love of good food is one of the things binds us all together. With the current state of the food supply however, it is not always easy to find REAL food.

Most of the food we have access to today are foods that provide little in the way of nutrition and are made with ingredients containing toxic chemical residues either from pesticides and herbicides that were used to grow the various ingredients or from chemical additives used to extend shelf life and make the food look more attractive, and even artificial flavors to replace the original flavors that were lost during the processing phase. There is not much that is REAL in these foods, but somehow we’ve become complacent about our food supply and seem to accept it as a given that the foods on our grocery shelves, including upscale grocers are safe and even healthy for us to eat on a daily basis.

It All Begins With the Soil

It all begins with the SOIL. It’s no secret that a large majority of the world’s soils are sorely depleted of minerals, and as such, foods grown in these soils (conventional foods), contain much lower levels of nutrients than they did even 70 years ago when this problem was first brought to the world’s attention by Dr. Charles Northen when he presented a report to the US Senate warning that America’s soil were hugely depleted of minerals (though nothing has been done about it to this day). Our soil, it appears, is not a sexy enough topic to get the attention of mainstream media, but it is HUGELY critical. It is after all where everything begins! And a dead soil means dead food!

A soil’s fertility however, is one of the foundations of organic and biodynamic farming, which promote measures to ensure that the soil is alive with the micro-organisms that are needed to create the nutrients that are absorbed by crops. It’s just common sense then, that “ORGANIC” should be the starting point for all our food.

There are those who would say that Organic farming provides lower yields than conventional crops and is therefore not an efficient system to feed the world, but this in fact has been proven to be completely wrong. Various organizations including the UN’s FAO are now of the belief that organic farming must be a part of the strategy to ensure food security for everyone.

It’s All About the Flavor and Decadence!

Food is a pleasure we all like to indulge in, but there is absolutely nothing decadent or indulgent about consuming the toxins found in the majority of our foods today. Have you ever noticed how the world’s finest chefs either have their own organic gardens or seek out organic farmers to ensure they have access to the highest quality ingredients? These chefs, who are intimately acquainted with food, are aware that organic ingredients provide superior flavors.

Decadent and indulgent foods must therefore begin first with:

• the highest quality organic ingredients (ingredients that have not been contaminated with toxic chemicals from herbicide and pesticide use, have been grown in healthy soil to ensure they contain the nutrients they should and that have not been genetically modified)

• minimal processing and

• no added toxic chemical preservatives and additives. These measures are what will allow us to experience the true flavors and decadence of our various foods.

I believe it is possible to have our cake and eat it too, or at least, we should be able to have our cake and eat it too, meaning we should be able to enjoy the foods we eat, but also know that they are providing us with the important nutrients that we need, not only to survive (as we’re barely doing now as is evidenced by the high rate of chronic diseases), but to THRIVE.

Ultimately, decadent and indulgent foods should therefore not only provide great pleasure in consuming them, but at the very least, not cause us any harmful effects and at best provide us with the health enhancing nutrients we so desperately need.

Now that is REAL indulgence!

We first however have to be aware about what we are currently being TOLD is real food and what ACTUALLY is real food.

Once we have this awareness, that’s when the fun starts! We can start demanding not only flavorful foods, but foods with the nutrients we all need to truly thrive!

It really is that simple!
