CALIFORNIA'S LARGEST
WIND FARM OPENS
Leading U.S. wind power producer FPL Energy has officially opened the largest wind farm in California, in the hills east of San Francisco.
The company, a unit of Juno Beach, Florida-based FPL Group Inc.FPL.N , said the High Winds Energy Center will be capable of generating enough energy to power nearly 75,000 homes.
A spokesman said the plant can currently produce 146 megawatts of electricity, and capacity should be raised to 162 MW by the end of the year.
FPL Energy is the largest U.S. wind power producer, accounting for about 40 percent of installed capacity. Its fleet of wind farms includes the nation's largest, the massive 300 MW Stateline plant on the Oregon-Washington border.
PPM Energy, a unit of Scottish Power PlcSPW.L , purchases all of the output from the High Winds plant and markets it wholesale customers that include municipal utilities in Sacramento, Pasadena, Anaheim and Glendale.
The plant is located in the Montezuma Hills in Solano County, about 60 miles northeast of San Francisco.
