ECO FRIENDLY YOGA

Practicing yoga can help you relax, and can also improve your balance, flexibility and strength. If you want to help the environment at the same time as you improve your health, you can purchase eco friendly products to use during your yoga practice. Various factors can make a product more environmentally friendly, including sustainable growth, production or manufacturing methods or using recycled materials.

Mats

There are a number of options for more eco friendly mats that do not contain PVC or phthalates, both of which are bad for your health as well as being bad for the environment. The three most common options include mats made with natural rubber, those made from plant fibers, and alternative plastic mats made with thermoplastic elastomers or TPE. The best options are those made from organic materials, as others could be still be produced with chemicals. Just make sure that whichever option you choose you follow the instructions to keep it clean.

Blocks

Cork blocks, bamboo blocks and some types of foam blocks are environmentally friendly. Cork and bamboo are sustainable since they can grow much more quickly than many woods, but if you want a lighter option some foam blocks are made without dangerous chemicals so they are odor-free and non-toxic.

Water Bottles

Both glass bottles covered with silicone sleeves and stainless steel water bottles offer a more environmentally friendly option than plastic bottles, even the reusable ones. Many plastic bottles contain PVC, and even those that don't are produced using non-renewable resources, since plastic is made using petroleum. Glass and stainless steel are less likely to emit any dangerous substances and can be made from recycled materials.

Mat Bags

Mat bags made out of hemp are a sustainable and environmentally friendly way to carry your mat to and from yoga class. Hemp is long lasting and can be cultivated without using any dangerous chemicals. Other good options include bags made from organic cotton or from recycled materials.

Workout Clothes

When it comes to workout wear, you can take it in a number of different directions. Organic cotton clothes are one option, since these are made using eco friendly methods. Another option is to wear clothes made from recycled polyester, since wearing vintage or recycled clothes limits the need to produce new clothes, reducing the amount of resources used.

There are a wide variety of environmentally friendly options for your yoga workout gear if you make the effort to look for them!
