Snowsquall
Posted By Craig Seiger
Unexpectedly I was there
This chilly November day
At the christening of Scott's Canyon--
Carpentering a gate alone
High on Quaker Hill
I watched dark clouds
Build on the far ridges
The long profile of firs
Blotted with rain--
Astonished to see a double rainbow
I hurried to the rim
Low shafts of golden sunlight
Poured into the forest bottoms
As the squall advanced,
Far below a loose flock of white birds
Turned above the treetops--
Suddenly the close pines were full of wind,
Sending the last of autumn's leaves
Flying,
Mixed with frozen rain--
Enchanted I stood there
As hail thrust itself out of the swirling clouds
To the dark earth,
And I remembered Muir's exhiliration
With mountain storms,
Chanced to encounter the transcendent spectacle
When sunlight & snowcloud ravish the mute earth,
I was there too
Christened on the Sierra slope
