The Coldest Day Of the Year
Posted by craig steiger
It is the coldest day of the year.
The overnight thermometer read 22 degrees.
It is exhilirating to be out walking at dawn,
Where the old familiar world
Has been made over in the image of ice.
Every branch in the pinewoods
Is freighted with new snow,
From the close trees I pass under
A continuous shower of the finest snow-dust.
There are no sounds
Save for its faint patter on my heavy jacket.
In these backcountry lanes there will be no travel,
The virgin snow is printed only with rabbit's feet.
