In Loving Memory of Michael Perlman
Posted by J. Maida
I woke this morning to a crow yammering at my window. His call summoned all the birds for miles, it seemed, and I drank in the sounds of Mother Nature's creatures as they sang their discordant symphony to me. I listened, holding the moment close, allowing it to enter my being and nourish me. The birds seemed to know that I needed to hear them this morning and my spirit was lightened. During the day, I would remember their sunrise refrain and I would call it back to the fore of my mind to care for my soul. It has been a good day, thanks to my feathered friends. A day when my spirit and soul were nurtured by the vibrant echo in my heart of Nature's music. April 9, 1998
This is dedicated with love and gratitude to Michael Perlman.

Readers should know that Michael Perlman took his own life as a statement of his dispair over the assault upon our Mother Earth. His poem, "For Earth" mentions such an action. I shared the podium with him and other activists afew days before his death. He gave me a copy of his most recent book and wrote on the opening page; "For D.O., for Earth." I wish he had told me of his intentions then. That evening I spoke about how committed activism gives me the hope and inspiration I need to keep going (in the face of seemingly impossible odds). We need him here, now. We need you too.
